Techstars has spent the past two years supporting the founders and the startup ecosystem in Taiwan. They conducted their first assessment on the local startup ecosystem last year to understand the current state of the entrepreneurship community for tech-enabled companies in Taipei. This report identified three barriers: (1) A lack of high-growth startups, or scale-ups; (2) Heavy reliance on government-led programs; and (3) Rare entrepreneurs-to-entrepreneurs connections.
One year later, as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, these structural challenges are now coupled with new disruptive forces accelerated by the COVID-19 crisis. The global tech communities are adapting to a world that is embracing the leap in digital transformation and AI adoption, the prevalence of videoconferencing, and the new normal of remote work.
While Taiwan has successfully avoided the health and economic disruptions from the global pandemic, it is not going to be immune from those massive economic shifts that are reshaping the world. What progress has been made since their last assessment in the Taipei startup ecosystem? How are Taipei founders responding to the new disruptions caused by COVID-19? Does the ecosystem have what it needs to thrive in the innovation-driven economy, and to compete globally?
With those questions in mind, Techstars is launching their second assessment in Taipei to measure the progress in the past year and characterize the opportunities and challenges at this unique COVID moment. As part of this research, we would like to hear directly from you about your experience as a founder in this special time. We expect this survey to take no more than five minutes, and your insight will help them to continue to grow and build the Taipei Startup ecosystem.
